116 South Michigan
Horwitz & Company
100,000 s.f., 17 Stories 116 S. Michigan Ave. Chicago, Illinois
Originally built as Chicago’s Municipal Building, this structure designed by Jenney Mundie & Jensen in 1906, has been totally renovated for modern office usage. Part restoration and part renovation, the non-descript original lobby is redefined and embellished with new marble, decorative plaster, terrazzo, ambient lighting, and bronze doors – all to reestablish the building’s turn-of-the-century character and elegance.
On the façade of the narrow, glazed terra-cotta building, two new columns are placed to visually support the structures and relate it to the existing streetscape, while a new storefront and entry are detailed in a manner sympathetic to the original construction. |
