Paseo: A Vertical Extension of Rainey Street

Throughout this series, we’ve explored Paseo from different perspectives, from its relationship to Rainey Street and its preserved bungalows, to its layered amenity spaces, integrated hotel, and the everyday experiences that shape life within the building.

Pappageorge Haymes Partners designed high-rise mixed-use residential tower located at 80 Rainey Street in Austin, Texas.

Together, these chapters reveal a larger idea: Paseo was designed as an extension of its neighborhood. Rainey Street has long been defined by its character and transformation. Its evolution has created a unique mix of old and new, intimate and social, indoor and outdoor. Paseo responds to that context by interpreting these qualities in a vertical setting.

At ground level, 80 Rainey connects to the neighborhood through landscape, a café, and a new pedestrian paseo that leads toward the riverfront. As the building rises, that connection continues through the terraces, balconies, pools, lounges, and shared spaces. Rather than concentrating amenities into a single destination, Paseo distributes them throughout the building, creating different environments for gathering, working, and wellness. The result is a building that encourages movement and discovery, with different levels offering a relationship to the city and to the community within it.

Paseo also reflects how the idea of home continues to evolve. Today, daily life doesn't happen in one place. We work, exercise, socialize, relax, and entertain in different ways and in different settings. Paseo responds with spaces designed to support those changing rhythms, from co-working areas and fitness spaces to pools, and outdoor terraces.

The integration of ROOST Rainey Street adds another dimension, bringing hospitality and residential living together within the same environment. The result is a more fluid relationship between home, travel, and work.

Ultimately, Paseo is about creating connections to a place, to people, and to the different ways we experience a city.

It acknowledges the history and character of Rainey Street while looking toward its future. It brings together landscape and architecture, hospitality and home, private spaces and shared experiences. Paseo doesn't attempt to recreate Rainey Street at a larger scale. Instead, it takes inspiration from what makes the neighborhood distinctive and translates those qualities. From the street to the skyline, Paseo is a continuation of Rainey Street’s story and a new perspective on urban living.
